General FAQs
Are memory cafes free?

Yes memory cafes are free! Some cafes may ask for a small donation but this is optional and is used for the benefit of its members. Some cafes may organise meals out, for example a Christmas dinner, and there may be a charge.

Do I need to prebook?

It is always a good idea to contact the cafe (each cafe’s contact detail can be found on our website) if you haven’t attended before to confirm the cafe has space and they are not on a trip out.

What can I expect from a memory cafe?
Every memory cafe in our network is unique, however they all run for 2 hours and include a tea break which usually consists of hot drinks, biscuits and cakes. The sessions are made up of activities which are good for the brain such as quizzes, singing and games as well as movement activities such as chair yoga and guest entertainers and facilitators such as musicians, drama groups, and artists. They also have visits from various outreach workers from the many different care and support services in Cornwall. Some of our cafes also run a carers group at the same time but you are welcome to stay with your loved one for the whole session should you wish too.
Do I need to bring my carer with me?
We recommend bringing your carer along with you as the cafes provide support to both the person living with dementia and their loved ones. If you are attending without a carer you will need be able to manage your own personal care needs as our cafes are run by our volunteers who are unable to support you with this.
Do I need to have a referral to the cafe?
No, there is no referral required. Just contact the memory cafe direct before attending to check they’re running the session on the day you wish to attend.
Do I need to have dementia to attend a memory cafe?
This does vary between cafes and is up to their discretion if you need to have dementia, or a confirmed diagnosis. Some cafes are open to everyone, others you may need to have a diagnosis or you presume you have dementia or memory loss. Please check with the memory cafe before your visit.
Is there any help with transport to get to a memory cafe?
Some cafes may have a community bus although the majority require their members to arrange their own transport – it’s always best to check with the cafe or a wayfinder. Age UK Transport Access People (Tap) services (01872 223388) may be able to help with transport but this is dependent on whether they have a volunteer driver and medical appointments will take priority.
Are refreshments provided?
Yes, usually this will consist of a hot beverage, biscuits and/or cake.
Can I attend more than one memory cafe?
Yes of course. Many of our members visit multiple memory cafes as they often run on different days so you can visit as many as you like within the month.
Are memory cafes accessible?
Many of them are accessible, with disabled parking nearby, disabled access toilets and wheelchair accessibility. But as many memory cafes run in village and community halls, there is a chance the cafe may not have these amenities so do check with the cafe before you visit.
Are there other community groups in the county for people living with dementia?
Yes there are multiple other community groups in Cornwall that all offer something different. Memory Matters run Cognitive Stimulation Therapy groups, Age UK run day care centres, and Sensory Trust have walking groups, to name a few. You’ll find information on these organisations on the directory page.
Is there a newsletter or mailing list to stay updated?
Yes, we have a monthly newsletter that comes out in the first week of every month, which includes cafe news, network news, resources and upcoming local events and learning opportunities. To sign up, click here.
How can I volunteer or get involved?
If you would like to volunteer, you can contact the memory cafe directly who will take you through their onboarding process which differs for each cafe.
I am concerned about one of the members at my cafe and I don’t think they are getting enough support, what can I do?

If the person has a dementia diagnosis, then you should contact the local Dementia Together team (West Cornwall: 01736 697909: Central Cornwall: 01872 277963 & North-East Cornwall: 01752 243333). If they do not have a diagnosis, then referring them to their GP for an assessment is the best option,  and for quick support & advice, you can contact DIAL on 01736 759500, 9am-5pm Monday to Friday
